Hmong Needlework
The most distinctive and labor intensive element of Hmong clothing is Hmong needlework. In fact, Hmong needlework is considered an art form and large collections of Hmong needlework pieces are featured at museums in Colorado and California. Hmong needlework is known as Paj ntaub, or “flower cloth” and usually feature vivid colors, designs and patterns which are derived from forms in nature, and are symbolic in Hmong culture. Brides wear the most elaborate Hmong needlework, often multiple garments that took many years to complete. Hmong needlework is a skill that has been passed down for generations and is still highly regarded today.
